This shift boot retainer is designed to convert C5 automatic transmission shifter plates (NOT INCLUDED) into manual transmission shifter plates. There are two versions, one for auto shift plates up to and including model year 2001, and for auto shift plates 2002 and newer, as in 02, the auto shift plate opening changed.
The pre-02 version is designed to fit an original Audi C5 manual shift boot and knob assembly (NOT INCLUDED) and replaces the plastic piece screwed to the underside of the original auto plate.
The 02+ version is attaches the same way, but also includes a boot ring designed to fit an original Audi B6 or B7 manual shift boot and knob assembly (NOT INCLUDED). It requires removing the boot ring from the B6 or B7 assembly (normally stapled on) and replacing it with the one included in this kit. This is because the 02+ auto shift plates have too small of an opening to allow an original C5 manual shift boot to fit. No cutting or trimming to the shift plate is required.
